From Apprentice to Employee: Meet Nafesse

By Jade D.

JEVS Project WOW is all about getting young adults, ages 16-24, ready for exciting jobs in the building trades and information technology. It’s done through teaching important skills, helping with professional growth, and making sure they earn a high school diploma or something similar. Project WOW is here to support them in reaching their education and job goals.

We had a great talk with Nafesse not too long ago about his experience with Project WOW and how it paved the way for his role at JEVS.

Why did you enroll in JEVS Project WOW?

I enrolled in JEVS Project WOW because I was lost and didn’t know how to further my life and career. When I was informed that JEVS was enrolling students into their IT Pre-Apprenticeship program, I figured I could go and get the foundational knowledge to pursue a great career in IT.

What impact has the program had on you personally and professionally?

After completing the Project WOW Pre-Apprenticeship, I was opened to the broad and extensive path in the Information Technology space. I interviewed with JEVS and became an Intern, which led me to my current Junior Help Desk Analyst role 5 months later.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about enrolling in WOW?

The advice I would give a student enrolling into JEVS Project WOW would be to stay vigilant and open-minded with the intent to learn as much as you can. There’s so much to take from this program, and it can help you become the best you can be going forward.

What career opportunities do you have now?

I now have a Junior Help Desk role here at JEVS Human Services with space to grow my career and I can say I am honored to be an apprentice of JEVS Project WOW.

People of JEVS: Meet Carmen

By Jade D.

At JEVS Human Services (JEVS) we pride ourselves on not only helping those we serve to reach their goals, but also in finding, keeping, and nurturing outstanding staff members!

Our employees range from Direct Support Professionals (DSP) and job coaches to communications specialists and accounting professionals, all with a common goal to give excellent service and support.

Recently, our Help Desk Manager Carmen G. shared about his JEVS’ experience, tech advice, and surprising career background!

How long have you been with JEVS?

I have been working for JEVS since December 2021, just under two years.

What attracted you to your role and JEVS?

Up until my employment at JEVS, my IT career was in the private sector, but I was interested in succeeding at a nonprofit agency. I did some research and was attracted to the great work JEVS was doing.  I have to say without hesitation that working at JEVS has been an incredible journey so far. The people I work with and support here are true heroes. JEVS is also invests in its employees and encourages us to grow and succeed. I have been active in joining various JEVS committees and was also selected to participate in the Leadership Development Series.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in a career in IT?

A couple of things come to mind; technology is always evolving and changing quickly, so if you want to succeed in IT, commit yourself to being a lifelong learner. Complacency can turn you into a “dinosaur” quickly, especially in the IT industry.  When faced with technical or customer support challenges (and you will be), look at the bigger picture and be curious. Being curious changes your perspective and helps alleviate any anxiety or stress. Focus on a resolution and communicate with the end user and your team, instead of predicting a negative outcome. Make sure that you surround yourself with a great team and ask for help. Lastly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, you are going to make them, so don’t get discouraged; instead learn from them.

Supporting Inclusion in the Workplace

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! Every year, we celebrate the hard work of employees with disabilities and work to make sure that everyone, no matter their abilities, can be a part of our workplaces.

This year, we’re also marking 50 years since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 became a law. This important rule makes it illegal to treat people with disabilities unfairly at work. This year’s theme is all about making sure everyone gets a fair chance at work – now and moving forward.

While we celebrate how far we’ve come, we’re also committed to making sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to find and keep a job.

What is NDEAM?

NDEAM stands for National Disability Employment Awareness Month. It’s a national campaign that happens every October in the United States. The history of this event goes back to 1945 when Congress declared the first week of October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” It has since grown to include all types of disabilities and now lasts for the whole month.

This yearly campaign reminds businesses that they have a responsibility to make their workplaces fair and diverse. It also gives them resources and ideas to support NDEAM throughout the year.

When organizations create places where everyone can do well, it helps us reach our full potential, work together better, and grow.

How Can You Support NDEAM?

You don’t need to be an employer to help NDEAM. Here are some ways individuals can get involved:

  • Educate Yourself: Learn about what it’s like for people with disabilities at work. Understand their rights and why it’s important to have workplaces that are open and welcoming to everyone.
  • Advocate: Speak up for hiring practices that include people with disabilities in your community. Encourage local businesses to think about hiring people with disabilities.
  • Volunteer: Many organizations and charities focus on disability awareness and advocacy. They can use your help, whether it’s offering your time or skills. Your support can make a big difference.
  • Raise Awareness: Share information about NDEAM and why it’s important to have inclusive workplaces with your friends, family, and on social media. Just spreading the word can make a difference.
  • Support Inclusive Brands: When you shop or choose services, consider businesses that are known for being inclusive and for employing people with disabilities.
  • From Celebration to Action

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a time to celebrate the special skills and contributions of people with disabilities at work. By promoting inclusive workplaces and fighting for equal opportunities, we can create places where everyone can succeed. This NDEAM, let’s work together to make our workplaces open and supportive for all people!

Employee Town Halls with CEO Cynthia Figueroa

JEVS Human Services (JEVS) President and CEO Cynthia Figueroa had Town Hall meetings with JEVS employees to celebrate all the good things and important milestones achieved in the programs and groups during the last year. These meetings also gave the staff a chance to get to know each other better. In total, 500 employees joined these meetings, both online and in-person!

Cynthia was thrilled to hear so many staff members share their experiences. She asked everyone to answer the question, who is JEVS? Everyone gave excellent responses, including: JEVS is “humanitarian gladiators!” Other answers were: “JEVS is a large social services agency that helps individuals meet their life goals and live independently.” “JEVS recognizes that everyone deserves to live with dignity.” “JEVS is an opportunity provider.”

She also went over big wins for the organization for the past year, including the following:

  • JEVS Community Living and Home Supports division expanded its work to Trenton, NJ
  • The Diversion and Reentry Services program within JEVS’ Workforce Development division also expanded its reach. The Choice is Yours program, a diversion program for first time nonviolent drug offenders ages 18-24, opened a second office in Montgomery County, PA.
  • Orleans Technical College, JEVS’ vocational training school added Health Care Training to its suite of training offerings.

Staff Town Halls are one way that JEVS continues to improve the collaboration and integration of its programs and services.

From Client to Employee: Meet Jorge

By Fatima Martin

Imagine working successfully as a nonprofit consultant for years only to find yourself suddenly needing a job during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That’s the position in which PA CareerLink® client Jorge found himself.

After navigating his job search on his own as a mature job seeker, Jorge needed support finding employment opportunities. So, Jorge sought help through the Mayor’s Commission on Aging, a resource that led him to PA CareerLink®

From day one, PA CareerLink® inspired Jorge. As a place of cooperation, support, and empowerment, “it became the place I wanted to be part of in my employment journey,” he shared. The program played a substantial role in helping Jorge land his current role as a Bilingual Workforce Advisor at PA CareerLink®.

This means that now Jorge is helping others who are in the same place that he was a few years ago!

Jorge is beyond grateful for the team that supported him in restarting and reclaiming his career path and is happy to now work alongside them.

Recognizing the Vital Role of Direct Support Professionals

Did you know that Direct Support Professional (DSP) caregivers help thousands of individuals live independently in their homes and be active in their communities?

That’s because DSPs empower individuals with disabilities to maintain autonomy by helping them complete daily activities. DSPs serve as guides, mentors, and non-medical caregivers, assisting individuals in reaching their full potential and leading fulfilling lives.

Congratulations to the Certified DSPs at JEVS!

Direct Support Professionals provide dedicated care that enable eligible individuals to retain independence and live at home, which honors the capability and dignity of each person.

In order to offer the highest quality of support, DSPs complete various trainings to receive their certification levels.

Recently, 3 DSPs from JEVS graduated and received new DSP certifications from the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) E-Badge Academy.

  • Gianna McCallough – DSP 1 certification
  • Luis Santos Barreto – DSP 1 certification
  • Faith Oyugi – DSP 3 certification

These certifications empower DSPs with the best practices and industry knowledge required to excel in their roles, ensuring that the individuals they support receive top-tier care and assistance.

In recognition of their immeasurable contributions and vital work, JEVS celebrated Direct Support Professionals during the national annual DSP Week in the second week of September!

JEVS Recognizes Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Week

The work of DSPs goes far beyond simply assisting with daily tasks. In fact, they’re a driving force behind the independence, confidence, and growth of those they support.

During DSP Week, members of the JEVS team treated DSPs to complimentary smoothies and also dropped food and giveaway items to residential homes.

Their participation in ongoing certification training illustrates their dedication, and we’re grateful for their commitment to those we serve!
