Cynthia Figueroa previewed JEVS strategic plan, to be unveiled in full later this summer. She addressed JEVS’ focus on increasing services to youth, growing healthcare programs, expanding geographically, and fostering financial stability. She also announced that, “just last week, JEVS was selected as one of four organizations globally for an investment from ServiceNow.”

Citizens’ Role in Fueling Philadelphia’s Economic Growth through Grow with JEVS

By Erin G.

Dan Fitzpatrick, a commercial banking executive with over 25 years of experience, is the President of Citizens’ Mid-Atlantic Region. In this Q&A, Dan shares about Citizens’ role as the presenting sponsor of Grow with JEVS and the impact of this partnership on Philadelphia’s economic growth and community enrichment.

1. What motivates Citizens to sponsor Grow with JEVS?

Through Citizens’ giving strategy, we support initiatives that lift people up, so that our local economies also succeed. Citizenship is at the heart of our company’s identity, and when people and communities reach their potential – we all thrive. By sponsoring Grow with JEVs, we can fund both JEVS’ mission and a convening event for influential leaders in Philadelphia.

2. How do you see the annual fundraiser Grow with JEVS supporting the Greater Philadelphia communities?

Events like this shine a light on the needs and opportunities that exist within our city. And most importantly, what solutions JEVs brings to the table. While we celebrate their successes, it is also a call to action on what more needs to be done to help people reach their full potential.

3. Why should public and nonprofit partners work together to provide opportunities for individuals?

We can’t solve community problems alone. We need to team up to provide multiple opportunities for people to succeed.

4. As a business leader, how do you see the partnership between Citizens and JEVS Human Services supporting local economic growth?

At Citizens, we believe that supporting workforce development is a key part of having a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive business environment and society. We believe that employed communities drive economies and lead to entrepreneurship.

5. What would you say to encourage other businesses in Philadelphia to support JEVS’ mission?

By investing in job training and wrap around services, you’re helping to set people up for financial success, which in turn helps Philadelphia to thrive as an economy. And when our city succeeds – we all succeed.

Driving Economic Prosperity in Philadelphia

With gratitude for Citizens’ support for Grow with JEVS, we acknowledge their pivotal role in fueling Philadelphia’s economic growth. JEVS remains steadfast in its mission to work with individuals to create sustainable paths to independence and economic security. Together, we establish lasting impact and build brighter futures for our community.

April is Celebrate Diversity Month!

By Ashley R.M.

“Diversity doesn’t look like anyone. It looks like everyone.” –Karen Draper

Celebrate Diversity Month encourages us to embrace our unique differences and recognize the commonalities that unite us.

The purpose of this month-long celebration is to promote acceptance, inclusion, and understanding of different cultures, lifestyles, and perspectives. It’s a time to recognize and honor the diversity of all people, including differences in culture, gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, age, religion, abilities, education level, and other aspects of diversity.

Most importantly, it is a time to reflect on our journey and recommit ourselves to creating more inclusive environments for all employees and the communities we serve.

At JEVS, we recognize Celebrate Diversity Month and are committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Ways You Can Celebrate Diversity
  1. Watch a movie or documentary that explores different cultures, topics, and lifestyles and offers a glimpse of life through a multicultural lens. Need suggestions? Try these: 18 Movies That Celebrate Diversity to Watch as a Family

Valuing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion During Women’s History Month and Year-Round

Women’s History Month celebrates women’s contributions to history, culture, and society.

The 2024 National Women’s History Month theme is “Women Who Advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”

This year’s theme is timely. The latest data by the United Nations says the goal of gender equality and empowering all women and girls by 2030 is off track. We want this goal to become reality.

This month and every day, JEVS honors women who are allies for inclusion. They empower us to take a stand, do more, and use our power for the good of others!

As we focus on the theme of ‘Women Who Advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,’ we invite you to recognize the women in your community who support DEI values. Let’s work together to create fair opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender. Each one of us can make a positive impact: let’s remember to appreciate and support people who work toward a future where everyone is treated equally.

Three Stories of Hard Work and Success

By Erin G.

JEVS Human Services (JEVS) supports over 16,000 people in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey through almost 40 programs. These programs cover workforce development, Career and Technical Education (CTE), Community Living and Home Support, and JEVS Care at Home.

We hear heartwarming stories from people in JEVS programs that highlight why our mission is to help individuals create paths to independence and economic security.

During Women’s History Month, we’re sharing the stories of three amazing women who found success in JEVS programs:

Meet Jill

Jill lost her mom to cancer, inspiring her to care for others and study nursing. She found the right program with EduConnect. Jill is a powerful example for her two daughters, and her oldest is graduating from EduConnect in March 2024!

Meet Iryna

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Iryna and her family had to leave Ukraine. JEVS’ Center for New Americans (CNA) helped them settle in the U.S.

Philadelphia’s Promising Pivot: New Youth Workforce Initiative Aims to Streamline Career Development

By Maryann Pugh

PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a significant move towards fostering youth career development, the City of Philadelphia, the School District of Philadelphia, and Philadelphia Works have announced their collaboration on a city-wide initiative dubbed “Career Connected Learning PHL” (C2L-PHL). This program aims to integrate and streamline work-based learning activities, providing a host of opportunities for young Philadelphians to kickstart their careers.

Set to launch this summer, C2L-PHL plans to place 8,000 young people, aged 12 to 24, in summer employment. The initiative also seeks to broaden opportunities for year-round work-based learning activities to an additional 2,000 young individuals.

This new initiative represents a significant advancement for Philadelphia’s youth workforce system. It reinforces the city’s commitment to offering high-quality, career-connected learning activities for its younger population.

C2L-PHL succeeds the WorkReady program, which, over the past decade, has provided thousands of Philadelphia youth with paid work experiences during the summer and school year.

Vanessa Garrett Harley, Director of the Office of Children and Families, sees the potential in C2L-PHL. “It will offer many of our young people their first experience in the workforce and will help them discover the many pathways they can take to build life-sustaining and thriving careers,” she said.

Jermaine Dawson, Ed.D., deputy superintendent of academic services for the School District of Philadelphia, underscored the importance of the initiative. “Providing our students with opportunities to gain valuable skills that prepare them to realize any future they desire is critical,” Dawson said. “This partnership signifies an important investment in our youth.”

H. Patrick Clancy, president and CEO at Philadelphia Works, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of open communication, stakeholder involvement, and shared vision. “This collaboration signifies a turning point towards establishing a more streamlined, impactful, and equitable youth workforce system for the future of Philadelphia,” Clancy said.

JEVS Human Services (JEVS) has been selected to serve as the fiscal and contracting intermediary for C2L-PHL, supporting program operations, employer engagement, program oversight, and fiscal management.

The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. By providing young Philadelphians with work experience and career-connected learning opportunities, C2L-PHL is investing in the city’s future workforce. This could result in a more skilled, diverse, and economically vibrant city.

Furthermore, by establishing a more streamlined and efficient system for youth workforce development, C2L-PHL could potentially serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar issues. This initiative shows how collaboration between key stakeholders can lead to innovative solutions that benefit an entire community.

In essence, C2L-PHL is about more than just summer jobs. It’s about empowering Philadelphia’s youth, strengthening the local economy, and shaping the future of the City of Brotherly Love.

C2L-PHL enrollment opens in Spring 2024. Youth and their caregivers should periodically check the website at phila.gov/c2lphl for updated information about the program.
